Why am I so hungry?

You've had a stressful day so you eat three of those leftover brownies from the party. You're watching boring TV and before you know it, you've eaten an entire bag of potato chips. Many people turn to food for comfort. This is called "emotional eating." And it's devastating to weight loss efforts. Eating is supposed to fuel our bodies with tasty nutrition, but many of us are eating for emotional needs and other reasons.

The 2 types of hunger

To understand why we give into unhealthy cravings, it’s important to know about the 2 types of hunger:

Emotional hunger isn’t about your body’s need for nutrients. External hunger, also called “mouth hunger” is caused by triggers, a memory, a scent, and, most often, emotions. It is also commonly mistaken for thirst.

Internal hunger or "stomach hunger" is true physical hunger. It's that empty feeling in your stomach when you haven't eaten anything in several hours. It’s your body saying, “I need nutrition so that I can function properly.”

Most people’s hunger system are so off-track due to a lifetime of eating food severely lacking in nutrition and loaded with chemicals and preservatives. We have been taught to crave bad food because that is what bad food was intended to do…make you want more of it. It’s not real taste, it’s not real nutrition and once you get your internal hunger mechanisms back on track with proper nourishment, you will only crave healthy, natural, tasty, nutritious meals and snacks.
